About Us FreeRein was created in 2007 when a Florida Department of Corrections librarian became frustrated with imposed limitations that prevented inmates from receiving answers to questions they asked every day even though there were no legal or public safety reasons to obstruct their learning. Prison officials made it as difficult as possible for inmates to access outside knowledge about their legal proceedings, relevant legislation, current data affecting their well-being and quality of life, or planning tools for the future. Those inmates preparing for release were given inadequate one-size-fits-all hand-outs or blatant misinformation that then needed to be debunked. In recent years much political and social attention has been given to educating and preparing transitioning inmates so as to improve their chances for success in the outside world. Let's all hope these efforts make a real difference. Meanwhile, FreeRein still receives inquiries showing that much has not changed behind bars. Hundreds of inmates have found answers using FreeRein services.
Meet the Director: A.G. Graham holds a Master's degree in Library & Information Science from the University of South Florida, and a Ph.D. in Library & Information Studies from Florida State University. Dr. Graham strongly believes that the right to information does not stop at the razor wire. As most inmates will someday return to their communities, they need current resources and personalized service to make the transition as smooth as possible. |
